This is a critical moment for Bewl Water – and we need your help now.
A developer is attempting to overturn the unanimous 9–0 decision of Wealden District Council and force through plans to convert the water sports clubhouse at Bewl Water into 11 holiday lets. If this appeal succeeds, the damage to wildlife, water sports and the character of Bewl Water will be permanent.
The Planning Inspector will make their decision based on planning policy and public representations. That means your voice matters.
Why You Must Act
This appeal threatens to fundamentally change Bewl Water:
- It would urbanise the water’s edge in a nationally protected landscape
- It would harm an internationally important wildlife site, particularly Red List bird species
- It would introduce noise, light pollution and disturbance, including balconies and hot tubs beside the reservoir
- It would remove essential facilities for sailing, rowing and junior training, making regattas and safeguarding impossible
- It would destroy the area’s dark skies, which are vital for wildlife
- It offers no benefit for local people, and there is no proven tourist need for this development
This proposal was rejected because it is the wrong development in the wrong place. The appeal is a second attempt to push it through.
