From the Instagram account of Emily Craig – Olympic Gold medallist: – Extremely saddened to hear that the clubhouse at Bewl Water could be transformed into holiday flats, not only posing a threat to the local wildlife but also to the water sports (including rowing) that train on the reservoir. While a recent BBC article highlighted the negative impact on wildlife, it overlooked the repercussions faced by the water sports facilities.
Bewl has always been a place close to my heart as I learnt to row at Bewl Bridge Rowing Club. Bewl is where I fell in love with rowing and where my dream of one day competing in the Olympics was born.
The current proposal to convert the clubhouse will hugely reduce the facilities available for water sports and potentially raise a number of safeguarding issues for juniors. Bewl is such an incredible place to train and personally, I believe that any developments made to facilities should be to encourage and grow all of the water sports that use the lake, to inspire and support everyone- from aspiring future Olympians to those who simply enjoy being able to exercise on the water, surrounded by nature.
